SHOES FOR THE SHOELESS
www.shoesthatfit.org
Again we will be collecting NEW shoes for local school age children so they can return to school in early August in dignity.
All the children are living in the FAMILY RENEW COMMUNITY (Volusia County) with their parents. These families live in the shelter for a variety of reasons.
The criteria is strict and all parents (single or married) must work full time and save 30% of their salary to help them move forward in life.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS;
Each child's foot is measured properly by his/her social worker. This information is passed on to the coordinators of the project and we provide you as the donor with the information. You will receive a 3 x 5 card with the child's name, gender, age and shoe size. We will also give you a "How to purchase" sheet.
All shoes must be NEW and STURDY. (tie up sneaks preferred.) You can purchase socks if you wish.
No high end purchases please. K-mart, Wal-Mart or Payless are the perfect places to shop. By now, most of the sales personal are familiar with our local contribution and he/she will be happy to help you with the sale.
You return the shoes in the box and the 3x 5 card to the coordinators. We recheck them for size and remove the price tags, tape up the box and put the 3x5 card on top and they will be delivered to your needy child. It's all anonymous and the kids are thrilled.
If you want to be involved in this direct social action project, see us in the rear or the sanctuary after the Sunday Service and you can 'pick' a child. If you prefer not to shop but wish to donate cash, we can choose a child for you and we will do the shopping.

ARE YOU HUNGRY?
The people seeking food from Halifax Urban Ministries are!!!
The purpose of Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) is to respond to the needs of the hungry, homeless and low-income people in Florida's Volusia and Flagler counties.
Halifax Urban Ministries cares for people in need by providing emergency services with the objective of keeping them from becoming homeless.
Make a conscious decision every Sunday morning to take at least one item out of your pantry, bring it to UU and place it in the food basket. This is in the rear of the sanctuary .
Suggested items: Canned vegetables -fruit - juice, soup, pasta, pasta sauce, canned meats or tuna, canned beef stew, cereal, peanut butter, beans, granola bars, rice, macaroni and cheese. Complexed Carbs. and Hi Protein items are more nutritious than sweet foods.
Many of these people have infants and small children so consider foods for them. Baby food, applesauce, juice and dry milk. When shopping, consider the 'buy one get one free' items that would be applicable to this mission.
REMEMBER: HUNGER SHOULD NOT BE AN OPTION.
A SUCCESS STORY ON FAMILY RENEW COMMUNITY. (FRC)

Our UU is one of the nineteen faith based organizations that partially supports FRC.
This is transitional housing for parents with children. A 'hands up' program not a 'hand out'.
Due to unfortunate circumstances we have had a family in the UU cottage (unit 15) at the
Holly Hill facility for two years. They have worked hard, followed the program, are debt free
and saving their paychecks. They have been an inspiration to other residents who are less
disciplined.
They have been accepted by Habitat for Humanity and they are going to get a home!
Their 'sweat hours' are complete and ground breaking will be soon, right here in East Volusia County.
This is great news for Lynn, Ric and their two daughters, Maddy (7) and Tricia. (11)
Alliance Luncheon
Before taking time off for the summer the Alliance celebrated 2008 with a luncheon at the Sunset Harbor Yacht Club. These photos certainly depict the fun and fulfilling time that was had by all.
